A sinus lift is surgery that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the back teeth (molars and premolars).Sinus augmentation is another name. Bone is added in between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses if the depth of the bone is insufficient to take an implant. Measurements are obtained from 3D CT scans before the procedure to determine if a sinus lift is necessary.
There are two techniques that we use in our office:Lateral Window Method or Osteotome Method
Lateral Window Method: A bony window is created in the side of the maxillary jaw in the area of the molars or premolars. The sinus membrane is elevated, and bone material is placed between the sinus membrane and jaw. Sometimes, the implant is placed at the same appointment. The healing process is completed in 4 to 6 months.

Osteotome Method: Access to the sinus cavity is through the tooth extraction site, where a tooth has been lost or recently extracted. The bone is drilled out partially and then a pouch is inserted to push the bone in the floor of the sinuses upwards, thus creating the depth to insert an implant. Often, the implant is placed immediately, so that the process is completed in 4 to 6 months.
Osteotome Method
At Drs. Capps, Bowman & Padgett, we do the procedure in the office. Sedation is available. Sinus lifts are very commonly done for dental implants.
Why would I do this?
1. Not enough bone for implants to be placed in jaw
2. Bone loss due to accident or gums disease
3. Sinus may be too close to the upper teeth
