Witten/Herdecke University in Witten, Germany compared different hardness of bristles to determine effectiveness of plaque removal, gingival bleeding and tissue damage. The summary is that soft toothbrushes reduced bleeding and reached subgingivally more comfortably to remove subgingival plaque. Hard toothbrushes will remove more plaque but causes more tissue damage.
